Vlog: Teaching Our Children About Friendships

I originally made this video with plans to run it on a Friday - but it's Wednesday! So up it goes and I'm sorry for mentioning the wrong day on the video! (and the freeze frame of me below is even funnier than my mess up on the days lol!!!)

Deuteronomy 6 says that parents are to teach our children along the way of life, the truth of God's word. Sometimes we will be in formal settings reading God's word to our children. But other times there will be opportunities just in the normal course of the day, to speak God's truth. So here's how to turn cooking a spaghetti dinner into an illustration for our children on friendships.

I've always thought the verse about the three-fold cord was talking about having God a part of each friendship (and especially in marriage - God, your spouse, and yourself makes three that are very difficult to bend, let alone break!)... But your video is very interesting, and it is a good thing to teach our children to surround themselves with good quality friendships :)

Clara - GREAT point. I did not make that clear at all in the video...I was more focusing on the fact that our children do not want to be islands in their faith - or be the one who falls down and has no one to help him up.

I was assuming the God part of the equation since I was focusing on the importance of Christian friendships BUT you are right - I should have said that!

So sorry...if this was a typical blog post I'd go in and fix it up - but since it's a video - I'm stuck with it that way...ARGH! So Sorry.

Courtney - I agree with you completely! having supportive Christian friends is VERY important (even if they are 'just' likeminded blogger friends!). Some people/children are the kind who are only comfortable with one-on-one friendships and they find they only HAVE one friend, but with God in the equation, they already have a three-fold cord!! :) It is wonderful how we can find a friend in our Lord Jesus - He is not just a God way up there in heaven, He is right here with us! :)
Don't apologise, I was just sharing my thoughts and you don't need to feel like you need to change anything! :)
The Lord bless you!

This is awesome Courtney! I love the easy to use visual impact of something I cook at least once per week! May they always think of this lesson when they feed their tummies!

Thanks for linking up today at the MODsquad!

I so love your heart!

Because my daughter starts first grade next week, I have been thinking and praying a lot about friendships for her. I so desire a godly friendship for her.

And with ModSquad addressing this very issue yesterday and then you today, I know I'm not alone.

Thank you for taking the time to minister to readers the way you do. I know how time consuming and thought consuming it is to blog and to do it well.

Have a great day!

Such a great way to turn an otherwise everyday occurrence (cooking) into a learning experience. Throw in the word of God, and continuing the conversation.. it's a complete meal. Each time they see spaghetti they can be reminded of this lesson.

Excellent! My daughter starts jr. high in the fall and I have been working with her on this very concept for a few months. In fact, I am starting a life group for her and her friends that will closely align with this concept. I'll be using the spaghetti illustration with her and her friends, thank you!

Also, I am looking forward to seeing you and hopefully meeting you at Relevant.

Blessings,

Erin

This is a really neat idea! My DD(6) was actually watching over my shoulder this morning, and she got a kick out of it!

Creative, Courtney. I sometimes cook spagetti (or however you spell it), so I'll remember this one. I teach youth classes, too, and am always looking for some illustration - this one will work. Thanks.
