Discontent Americans

This morning I went to I Timothy 6 in my quiet time. Verse 6 says "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that."

I received the below quote in an email last week and I felt it was an interesting perspective on America -
-written by Craig R. Smith and published on WorldNetDaily.com at Thanksgiving, 2006.

"Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed. In essence 2/3s of the country just isn't happy and want a change. I started thinking, ''What are we so unhappy about?'' Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year? Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state? Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter? I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough.

Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You maybe upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings.

Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67percent of you folks unhappy."

After reading this, I am reminded that God calls us - his children - to just be content with food and clothes - look how much MORE he has given us as Americans! Praise His name today!

Walk with the King!

I need to comment about your posted quote from Craig R Smith. He noted in his beginning paragraph "67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed".
Well I believe we should be! I am very grateful to God that I was born in America and am a citizen. But with great gifts comes great responsibility. As Americans and as Christians we should be very concerned with what is going on in our country. If we are not careful and involved our liberties will continue to be eroded. If we are not diligent we will wake up and find the country that we remember is gone.

Courtney- have you read Radical by David Platt? I think it's a real eye opener for those of us who claim to know Christ. It talks about discontent and how the American Dream is overtaking what Christ has asked us to do...give to the poor, take care of orphans and widows, pick up our cross and follow Him.

I HIGHLY recommend you reading the book! We Americans have made Jesus into a middle class type of guy...one that doesn't require daily sacrafice and dependency on God.

It brings it ALL back to the gospel!

Gotta agree with Hippie4Ever. God didn't give us a free country so that we can sit around and watch it slowly slide downhill. Vigillance is what keeps a people free.

Also, I have to take issue with the idea that police protect us. When home invasions occurr it is up to the individual to protect himself. The police pursue and arrest the criminal -not stop him in the act the vast majority of the time. Just one reason the 2nd Ammendment is so important!

I think it is good that 2/3rds of Americans are unhappy with the way the contry is going! Aren't you? That is how positive changes are made!

Anonymous - I just received Radical in the mail last week and hope to read it in the new year.

In regards to the 67% of unhappiness - yes I agree that we should take action when our government is off - and trust me my hubby has...I do not get political on this blog because of the controversy but in real life my husband is very involved in politics. He has been to Washington DC to make his voice heard just within the last 3 months! So yes - dear Christian sisters - stand up!!! And let your voice be heard!!!

In the post you might note that this quote was written in 2008 - so prior to some of the economic and social struggles we have experienced in the last 2 years.

Also, I love my second ammendment right and we are NRA members here. Again - controversial - so I'll stop lol!!! But you get the point :-)!!!

Keep walking with the King!

One more thing, contentment has nothing to do with our things, where we live - America or not - it has to do with our relationship with God. There will always be people with more or less. There will always be people who appear to have it easier, better, or greener. The question is not - will you be content with America - the question is - what in the world do we need to be content?

Look at all we have and we still wrangle with discontentment - which shows that indeed - it is not where we live or what we have but the inner peace that comes from knowing Jesus.

My friend Joy, a missionary in Indonesia has hit the nail on the head about contentment here: http://www.thestayathomemissionary.com/2010/11/seeing-gifts.html
