Vlog: Children's Object Lesson - Watch What You Say

Deuteronomy 6:7 says to teach our children God's commands along the way of life.

It is important that we train our children to watch what they say. We can save them from a lot of heartache by simply teaching them to think before speaking.

(You'll notice in the video that we had done a "dry run through" so the kids are a bit more "dramatic"and taking the words out of my mouth - so funny! I wish it were a little less scripted but you get the point!)

James 3:5,6 says "The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell."

The next time your kids are brushing their teeth or your cooking with Hot Sauce - add a little spiritual lesson in there just for fun! I think it's these little teaching moments along the way of life that really stick.

Oh I love it. kids are so wonderful. Never work with children or animals or so they say.
I remember that toothpaste one from years ago. We could probably make that a good graphic one day.
Bless you.

Great idea with the toothpaste... I think little kids & big "kids" alike could use that reminder from time to time! Also, I laughed when your daughter said, "Walk with the King!" Too cute, they were very excited!

Oh my goodness that was such a cute video. My kids loved it too! How do you determine what you will teach each day? Do you have a book that helps?

I like how Lexi says at the end, "walk with the king." Your words and testimony, Mama. I think you are having an influence!
It honestly brought tears to my eyes. I'm a grandmama to three precious ones and plan to use your ideas with them too. Thanks.

Amazing object lessons to go with the verses! Oh how much our tongues/mouths get us in trouble!!

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matt 6:33

Have a great day!

What a great lesson! I think that we'll do the toothpaste demo later as well!

And I used Tabasco this morning too...but, strangely enough, for my dog. After I caught him in the act of eating the ONLY pretty thing that I have left on my once-charming and inviting back porch (he has eaten all of the other lovely accents), I doused my woven rug in the spicy stuff. He hasn't touched it since...we'll see. So, now it seems that my guests will be greeted by the smell of hot peppers, but at least they'll have a place to wipe their feet. :)

You can check out what else he has eaten here: http://www.funmomonline.com/2010/05/true-story.html

Thanks for the great tongue tips!
Blessings,
Leslie

What a great lesson to teach our children. I need to read that verse to my kids. Two of them have really been at it lately with unkind words. I know I need to remember that verse for myself too!

Not only was it a wonderful lesson expressed in a memorable way, but as I listened and watched, I suddenly became aware that my four children were standing over my shoulder, listening and watching right along with me. Love your blog. Found you at FunMom.

Toni

Beth - thanks for sharing it!!!

Tab - I'm not teaching these every day - they just sorta pop up along the way of life. I have a bunch of ideas from school and from leading VBS that I did with other kids - so now I'm finally getting to use them on my own kids. I don't have a book or anything - just memories and also some of my own creative thinking... Focus on the Family does have a neat book called "Heritage Builders" that has object lessons in it for kids. I think that's where the toothpaste analogy came from. But they are from all different resources that I've collected over time.

Much Love,
Courtney
