I'm So Tired!

"I am so tired." Are those words that you think quite commonly? Me too!

I read a crazy statistic that said "In 1850 Americans crawled into bed at a reasonable hour and slept an average of 9.5 hours a night. By 1910, half the country had electricity, but our recent ancestors were still breathing evenly with their eyes closed, on average, nine hours a night. By 1950 an average night's sleep decreased to 8 hours. And by 2008, Americans, on average, go 6.5 hours of sleep a night." - Kathy Peel - America's Family Manager

We are a sleep deprived nation. How do you think that is affecting our marriages, our parenting and our homemaking?

Check out the rest of this article on how I think sleep deprivation is affecting our homes and for some solutions on how we can make sleep a priority on Raising Homemakers where I am featured today!

Yikes! I have to say that I am totally a statistic in this area! The problem is that I love nights (to relax), but I need the precious hours in the early morning (to get things done). I need an overall time management overhaul this Fall!! Thanks for the encouragement to make this a priority, Courtney! :)

our little one go to bed at 7 I try to go to bed by 8:30 so that I would be refresh when my husband comes home from work a little after midnight and then we sleep until our little one are awake at 7 am.

Even with all that sleep I still feel tired LOL, maybe it's years of sleep deprivation during university that are still making me tired years after!!!!

I never even thought about sleep deprivation until now - God created our bodies to rest themselves, and we really do need to take advantage of that!

Seems like a struggle that is on the minds of many women. I just blogged about it ("But Lord, I'm so t-i-r-e-d") about 4 days ago. I have been working HARD to make this a priority for a few months now (my husband has as well).
Blessings,
Toni

I went to bed at 10 last night and slept until 6 this morning (when my son woke me up...but then my husband fed him breakfast so I could sleep some more). So I got 8-8.5 hours of sleep.

Usually I don't get that much sleep, though.

I am definitely guilty of not getting enough sleep. Hazard of being a single mom with two boys who is also a full time law student. I'm often running 20 hour days to get everything done. I like your idea of planning out my day better, I definitely need to decide where things fit and see if there's something that I can get off my plate completely. I'm sure my boys will appreciate a well rested and not cranky and short tempered mommy.

On average I get 4-5 hrs a night. Even when I get to bed early, I am up before the sun. Taking naps doesn't always work, either too busy or to much going on in my head. I would be a better person all around if I got more sleep.

I loved this post over on the RH site!

Allowing "busy work" to steal my sleep is something I struggle with!

I am pretty good about making sleep a priority...more now that I am expecting my first child. Before experiencing the fatigue that came along with first trimester, I would struggle with my desire to stay up until 10:00 or 11:00 on the computer, looking at Facebook or just doing research. My husband works the night shift so there was no one around to remind me it was bedtime! Now I have no problem crawling into bed at 8:00 or 8:30 and enjoying every bit of my 9 to 10 hours of sleep. At first I felt like I was being lazy or there was something wrong with me, but after reading this article I see that my body needs this much sleep to function well.

Hi Courtney! I had no idea that people used to get that much sleep...9.5 hours...can you imagine? I get like 7-8 hours per night, which is probably a lot more than a lot of moms get. Anyway, Jill at ScaryMommy sent me your way (I used to work with her). She said she sensed some "synergy" with us... so I'm glad I found you! Hope we get to know each other better!

Great post! FYI - I recently read an medical article on sleep. It said that it is important to get up at the same time everyday. Sleeping in really messes up your body clock. If you need extra sleep go to bed earlier. It also said to avoid naps.

I've thought a lot about sleep - how much, how little, how adequate - since I had my stroke. I always felt sleepy and it was annoying me. Surely there was more to life than sleeping.

It drove me crazy until I realized that God prescribed sleep to revive and restore life. I needed to finish every dose or the "prescription" would not be effective.

OMG! I thought I was the only one. Seriously... We are a family with 3 children one being 4mos. Lately the baby has been waking like a newborn. There is no such thing as daddy get up durning the night in my house. So how do I keep my sanity with mega-headaches, fatigue, and ultra-crabbiness? Dare I say it ladies...the weight of being wifey, mommy, and stay spiritually focused is such a GREAT challenge.

If I have to add working to my list of "gotta do", I sware I might commit a crime.
