Until Death Do Us Part

Do you remember your marriage vows? They went something like this:

I, ____, take you, ____, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part.

"Until death do us part." Do you remember that line? Statistics say that in America, over 50% of marriages do not make it "Until death do us part."

Do you take your vows seriously? God does.

1. Matthew 19:6 says "what God has joined together, let man not separate." (exception: look at Matthew 19:9)

2. Malachi 2:14 says God is a witness to our marriage covenant.

3. Ephesians 5:22-33 says marriage is a picture of Christ and the church.

Let's agree with God that indeed our marriage vows are sacred and permanent. Forget that divorce is an option and commit to working on your marriage daily.

This weeks challenge is simply to Remember. Remember the day you entered your sacred vows. If you are a blogger, please post pictures from that day and share your story. Then link up below and link your post to this post.

Here's my story:

On a hot September Saturday, my husband and I made covenant with one another "Until death do us part."

It was a traditional wedding, with lots of family and friends there. The most embarrassing moment was when we lit the unity candle. As you can see in the picture, we brought our two individual candles together, lit the unity candle and then blew our individual candles out.

I LOVE the picture of the candles showing two becoming one. After the unity candle was lit, we stood and stared starry eyed into each other's eyes while music played. Then IT happened. The unity candle went OUT! Now all eyes were on us, the music was playing and we were laughing and I'm said to Keith - should we relight it? "No" he said. But I kept pushing "are you sure?" "No" he said again. Okay! And right there was the beginning of me learning to submit to my husband.

The rest of our day was wonderful. We had our dinner at an Amish Restaurant and then headed to Hawaii on our honeymoon (which was a gift from my sweet Uncle and Aunt!). Here's a picture of our first days of marriage on our honeymoon.

Our marriage vows acknowledge that we are more than just living together. We are committed. We are committed "Until Death Do Us Part!"

Walk with the King!

I love your wedding photo's Courtney. You are so beautiful and I believe your wedding was a beautiful reflection of God's loving relationship with the Church. I have only been to a few weddings like this. There is such a difference between a Christian and non-Christian wedding.

ps - Chris and I's past week went really well. We loved dedicating more time to just talk and will keep this up for sure! Thanks for this challenge. Praise God for his blessings.

This time of year is so easy for me to remember our wedding day. First of all, I am 9 days away from my third wedding anniversary. I can hardly believe that it has been three years already! Our marriage has been blessed in so many ways. A second way that I am constantly reminded of our wedding day is that my husband and I have embarked on a wedding videography business. So far we have filmed four weddings since April, and each wedding ceremony we attend is a reminder of the day that Craig and I joined our lives together! Thanks for your post Courtney!

My husband and I have been married for 25 years, but we divorced each other about 7 years ago, and then re married.. We did not honor that phrase, Until Death Do Us Part.. but we have recommitted our selves to the Lord and to each other,, We have 3 children and 2 grandchildren,, and learning to work through the bumps in the road instead to turning to the next Exit, has been wonderful,, for us and for our Family..Today and Forever more will we honor or vows..

What beautiful wedding picture, you both look so young :-) I love that even on your wedding day, God was showing you how to be a submissive wife!

I'm sure that was the the last time you had to submit to you lovely husband :-) I think it was a beautiful way to start your life together!

thanks for sharing this with us!

Love your pics, Courtney! I have to go dig mine out. Perhaps I will scan some and get them on my neglected blog. They weren't digital 10 years ago!

Our first wedding was very beautiful and filled with tradition. We, too, didn't honor the 'til death do us part vow. We split 4.5 years into it. Though we did experience adultery and addiction; it became a situation unsafe for my children and I. Perhaps we should have remained separated and not divorced, but I doubt he would have made the changes he did unless he hit rock bottom (which the legal aspect of the divorce forced him to do). That's not to say our God couldn't have done it, but that my husband, at the time, couldn't see what was right in front of his face.

However, we serve an amazing God, and He restores and fixes what is broken. Through a series of events only God could orchestrate (not as a puppet master, but as a guiding father), my husband made some major changes in his life. In fact, he finally ended up pursuing a serious career for the first time in his life as he prepraed to enter his forties.

Fast forward a bit and we are now remarried. Our second wedding was a legal one in a courthouse (boy, did I hate that!), but they allowed me to pray over our family before our vows. We are now working toward renewing our vows in the church on our original wedding day in October. I am looking forward to that day.

Thanks, Courtney!

You know what? No. Just...just no.

Because if my sister hadn't divorced her husband, she would be dead because her husband would have killed her.

So if marriage is so important to God that He wouldn't want a woman to walk away from a deadly situation because of it, then that God is not one worth worshipping.

Anonymous,

I would always advise a woman who is being abused to find safety away from her husband and seperate. She has legal rights that she should pursue - and she must if she'd like her husband to get real help.

I Corinthians 7:15 says "If the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace."

This scripture is referring to abandonment. God says if a spouse abandons the other spouse they are not "bound" to them meaning they may divorce. I believe that once an abuser has begun abusing he has abandoned the spouse (emotionally, physically etc)...if they can be restored I would seek restoration but in serious cases it is not safe and I beleive that the Bible does not say you must stay in your marriage.

Hope that helps clarify! Seek your Bible and know God - you will find the answers to these questions there!
Much Love
Courtney
