Homeschooling and My Marriage

I have received emails asking me to write about our homeschool endeavors. I am leery to write on homeschooling for two reasons. 1. I know many of my readers do not homeschool, so I don't want to bore you! lol! and 2. I feel like a rookie! (here's the kids on their first day of home school this past August - this was my first day of homeschool too!)

I feel like I have so much to learn about homeschooling, that I need to keep learning before I share. One website that has become a excellent source of inspiration to me is The Heart of the Matter Online. Their entire website is for homeschoolers and wowsers is it good!!!

I was invited to write a series of posts on "Marriage and Homeschooling" and so today's Marriage Monday is linked to my article over there.

Here's an excerpt:

After a long day of homeschooling, cleaning, cooking, perhaps uncooperative children, and laundry piling up, it’s easy to turn to our husband’s as soon as they walk in the door and say “heeeeeeeelp!” And though I completely believe in our husband’s being hands on with the children, we must not forget we are our husband’s helper.

Wow - that's a hard statement to swallow for a woman of our generation! Genesis 2:18 says that when God created Eve, she was created to be a "helper suitable for him (Adam)." That is the wife's purpose. It is quite plain in black and white. When you act as a "helper suitable for ... (insert your husband's name here)", you are glorifying God. And yet this is tough to write about because I know that it will offend someone out there!

It is hard for women to sit back and simply help their husbands - we are tempted to lead them, boss them, criticize them, expect them to take care of themselves and us, be tidy, and a helper to us. But in actuality - they are not our helpers - we are their helpers! Yes, God desires that they be servant leaders but whether they are actually doing that should make no difference as to our attitude of being their helper...

Walk with the King!

The wisdom offered in this post is the reason why I follow your blog. In today’s age, I have few role models of how to be a godly wife. The three points you state are simple, but FULL of wisdom and practical advice. Thanks for your courage Courtney in living and teaching what is right. You are light on a hill, shining in this dark and often confusing world.

Courtney,
I've started reading 'Love and Respect' by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. It covers some of what you mentioned in your post today. I haven't gotten very far, but have already learned a lot. This should be a staple in every Godly woman's home library.

On another note, I'm requesting feedback from you and your readers to a question, 'Is Marriage
Sacred?', a post on my site. I'd be honored if you and your readers would read it and respond.
Thanks! http://mymarriageismyjob.blogspot.com/2010/05/is-marriage-sacred.html

Thanks for linking to Marriage Mondays today, Courtney. I've learned that homeschooling DOES impact your marriage, just like any other schedule decision that involves our time and energy. Priorities don't change, just how we go about them. Whatever school approach our family uses, it's critical that husband and wife be on the same page, so both of our hearts and hands can be involved to make it happen well. Blessings on your home school as you wrap up year #1. :)

I'm just about to wrap up my first year of homeschooling as well! I definitely feel it can impact your marriage if you are not careful, and I think your three points are wonderful. It is hard in this society to remember that we are not supposed to be the ones in control of every little detail, but to be aiding our husbands with their needs to glorify God. I am so glad that I came across your blog..I have enjoyed every post you have made and look forward to more!

Great post, I left you a post over there. I have to laugh at what you said about homeschooling, because I think I've only done one "official" homeschooling post on my blog, lol!

I have been homeschooling for 16 years, and next year will be my last year as my youngest will be graduating. It really does go very fast, believe it or not! Thanks for linking up today.

Women today need to hear the what the Bible says about our role, not what the world thinks our roles should be. I am honored to be my husband's help meet. Yes it is hard and my ideas or ways might even be better than my husband's but..............it is better to allow him to lead and wait for him to ask for help. Your relationship will flourish beyond belief. And we homeschool and it really is a joy, as hard as it can be. Do I get up every morning shouting "oh joy I get to homeschool today?" No, but it is that perseverance that teaches me to raise up my children into God loving, God following people. I have several books I re-read every year to keep me on track and besides the Bible the one book that is a must read is "Created to be His Helpmeet" by Debi Pearl. Hard to swallow at times but full of the Bible and wisdom. If anyone had given me that book ten years ago, I would have burned it. I am so thankful for its truth. Keep up the good blogs!

Grace - read that book, and I need to read it again. It is hard to swallow sometimes, I agree. But that's when we know the Lord's teaching us something, isn't it? :) You also touched on something that The Power of a Praying Wife talks about, letting our husbands lead. I just finished that book and it was just fabulous. You should give it a try, if you haven't already.

Courtney - I just gave you an award! Keep up the good work!
