I am SO Tired!

"I am so tired." Are those words that you think quite commonly? Me too!

I read a crazy statistic that said "In 1850 Americans crawled into bed at a reasonable hour and slept an average of 9.5 hours a night. By 1910, half the country had electricity, but our recent ancestors were still breathing evenly with their eyes closed, on average, nine hours a night. By 1950 an average night's sleep decreased to 8 hours. And by 2008, Americans, on average, go 6.5 hours of sleep a night." - Kathy Peel - America's Family Manager

We are a sleep deprived nation. How do you think that is affecting our marriages, our parenting and our homemaking? I would go out on a limb and say that it is effecting them negatively. It is much more difficult to be patient when we feel tired. It is much more difficult to be consistent in training our children when we feel tired. It is much more difficult to be "joyful in all circumstances" when we are tired.

So what do we do? We must make sleep a priority. We must learn to manage ourselves more wisely! Ephesians 5:15,16 says "Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."

Evaluate your hours in the day and consider:
1. Do I often stay up late watching television or reading on the computer? Technology is stealing our sleep.

2. Have I set up routines in my life that save time. Do you waste time trying to figure out what is for dinner or trying to find a lost piece of paper. Do you procrastinate and do all your housework in one day? Read my weekly routine here.

3. Do you view your time as precious? Just as we spend money - we spend time. We have a limited amount of time in the day - just 24 hours. Are you budgeting your time like you budget your money - wisely?

4. We've got to disconnect. When evening falls and it is nearing your bedtime - we need to disconnect from facebook, message boards, texting and any other technology that will steal your sleep. If this is hard for you - set a timer (I've been using my cell phone alarm) and when it goes off - disconnect! Here's a great blog post that I read today - titled "Taming Technology"

5. Choose a bedtime goal and strive to be there every night. It is best for your body if you attempt to go to bed around the same time 7 nights a week.

Start the new year out right by letting yourself have an early bedtime tonight. Put the kids to bed and then you go to bed too! If you wake too early enjoy the quiet morning with a cup of coffee and your Bible. Your family will be blessed by receiving the gift of a well rested wife and mommy.

I do go to bed on time and sleep 8 hours and I still can't get up right at 6 when I'm wanting to! Tis the season of life I'm in with 3 little ones, I guess! :) I wish I was one who could go on less sleep.

I looove sleep so going to bed isnt too hard for me even though I tend to be a night owl but getting up is hard no matter what time I went to bed...I'm really trying hard these days to get up early and take care of my family like the prov 31 woman did...and with a cheerful heart!I think God is teaching me that through my daughter who is getting up earlier and earlier these days! Thanks for the ideas and encouragement as I'm pretty tired today after being up with s sick kid all night!

Yesterday our sermon at church was on the parable of the talents. Our pastor did a great job of helping us understand that EVERYTHING we have belongs to God.Including our time...not just our money. So I think your post today was meant for me! Thank you!!!!! I'm going to make a list and manage my time well today.....including going to bed at a reasonable hour.

I am off from work this month, so it has been nice being able to go to bed at a reasonable time and sleep all night! I have a lot more patience and enjoy the time I am spending with my kids! Normally I work 12 hour night shifts with very little sleep!! It makes parenting very difficult!

I struggle with sleep. I'm not a night owl but I still seem to get to bed too late. My husband tends to need less sleep than me so I end up staying up late many nights with him. I then can't seem to get up early. I need to work on disciplining myself in this area.

Eph. 5:16 is one of my life verses. I love the translation that says "redeeming the time." Valuable post.

These are great tips! And actually, since I'm pregnant, my body has been calling me to bed at an earlier hour (8 or 9pm) and I sleep better. Then I rise early, am able to wake up and be ready for the kids before they wake up and I really like that.
The only thing I don't like about going to bed really early is it takes time away from my husband. Once the children are in bed (b/w 8 and 9), that leaves our time and we usually spend it up, with each other.
But the last few nights, he or I have been going to bed early simply because we can't stay awake any longer. Perhaps we can spend our time together in the morning hours, reading our Bibles and that. I would like that.
Thanks for the tips!

This is a much needed post, Courtney. So many of us struggle with disconnecting. The computer is now controlling us instead of the other way around.

Christ can free us from this stronghold if we are willing to turn from this and seek Him. But we have to be willing!

I have started working on many things you mentioned. I try and go to bed at 10 pm the latest and get up at 5:30 so that I have an hour of quite time all to myself in the mornings.

I have started by doing some reading right before I go to bed. It gets all the junk TV out of my head and relaxes me. Plus I seem to have much more pleasant dreams.
