Super Nanny, Pollution, and God's Word

In this video, I mention Super Nanny. I want to clarify that I am not against Super Nanny but rather I am for looking in scripture first for our parenting answers. If we follow Super Nanny's methods we will raise respectable citizens (which I'd like to raise!). But our children will be lacking spiritually. We need God's word and God's principles to be our guide. Our children NEED the gospel. They need to know they are sinners in need of a Savior and that Savior's name is Jesus.  They need the help of the Holy Spirit to transform their hearts, minds and lives.

I also mention pollution in this video. I believe the digital age has the potential to pollute the minds of our teenagers. If iphones, ipads, and ipods go unmonitored we will raise a generation of children who are polluted with the worlds junk. As parents, we must be vigilant and pay attention to everything that goes into our minds and our children's minds. If we don't monitor it - who will? It is our responsibility!

My parents did this for me - and though I didn't like it at the time - now I am beyond grateful! I was a foolish daughter with wise parents! Please do not let your teens persuade you into believing they are wise and you are the foolish parent since you don't understand all the workings of these gadgets and gizmos they carry in their pocket.  They need us to guide and direct them into righteousness.

James 1:19-27 (ESV)
Hearing and Doing the Word

19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

26If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Wednesday, I'll move into James chapter 2 and discuss the issue of favoring the rich over the poor.  I hope you will join me!

I think this is interesting, this topic of pollution. You mentioned how we should search the scriptures first for our answers in parenting and I wholeheartedly agree. For a while after my first child was born, I subscribed to several different parenting magazines, trying to glean good parenting methods and skills out of them. But I quickly found that they stressed me out because there were so many different opinions and methods that contradicted each other. After a few years, I realized that all I really needed to know about parenting was taught in the scriptures and that I could also find specific answers through prayer. I canceled those subscriptions and now, not only does my home have less clutter, but my life has been simplified.

Have you read the book "Parenting by the Book"? I highly recommend it! REALLY GOOD read and an easy one. :)

Royalbird - I agree - there's TONZ of methods and techniques out there - it can make your head spin! There's so many voices in this world with television, magazines and the web. It can be confusing to know who to listen to. Ultimately - it's God we need to be listening to!

Rachel - yes - I've read that book by John Rosemond a long time ago and I liked it.

Thank you so much for this post! It's so encouraging for me to hear you talk about protecting your kids minds and the challenge to get our parenting "techniques" from scripture. Sometimes I feel like a loner in my strictness with my kids..esp. my 15 yr old daughter, monitoring cell phone and internet, it's constant...it can be such a battle, but one worth fighting.
After years of this, I think she's accepting our guidelines more than a few years ago (there is life after junior high!):) This is helpful since my 12 yr old son is seeing the expectations already in place for him (the battle with him is video games). Oh, how we need the Lord's strength for these very important tasks! Thanks again for your words of wisdom and for speaking what we desperately need to hear!! I am loving the book of James!

Great reminder to be more careful about what we let into our minds instead of thinking, "Oh, I can handle it" (what I often think).

Beautiful!! Such rich wisdom! This is such encouragement to not compromise as parents. And..what Royalbird said is sooo true! Our parenting should come from the word of God, there are literally several scriptures on how to raise children. Thank you for that encouragement on taking the pollution out of our homes. God holds us accountable as parents and sadly I know so many of the people who I went to school whose parents did not hold a standard of what the word of God says, who got into so much dangerous things! (premarital sex, drugs, gangs, etc.) Thank God for you Courtney and this blog!!!!

I believe that God is talking to me in these post. There have been a lot of interesting parenting God Words lately for me. Maybe there is something I need to DO. :)

I am an only child and didn't babysit much, so when I first became a mom 7 years ago I was lost. I'd read several "parenting" books that were completely useless. One even suggested that if I failed to do any of his suggestions my child would be lost to me forever, BY AGE 2!!!

Anyway, I was having some trouble with my now 3 year old. He was throwing violent, self-mutilating temper tantrums. I did a web search and came across an E-book called Raising Godly Tomatoes (www.raisinggodlytomatoes.com). The author is a mom of 10! And she gives honest to goodness, actually works, Scripture based how to's!
The temper tantrums aren't gone completely, but oh my what a change! Once I gave up outside activities (including church) and started really focusing on my kids and what they need I've seen a real difference.
Bible-based parenting is truly the way to go!!!

Arvil's wife! Yes - I discovered Raising Godly Tomatoes back when Alex was 3 and I used her method of keeping my son close by all the time to help me through some rough patches when his behavior was really off! I have enjoyed her website and hung out on her forum off and on for many years! Great recommendation!

I so agree with you on raising your children with the scriptures. When I was a young mother I read all sorts of child rearing books and then one day I discovered the scriptures and have found that they contain every example possible that one would need to raise children.
As far as technology goes I feel like our youth are not going to know how to relate of communicate with one another in person to person. Texting is taking away true communication.
Blessings for this post!

Thanks for the post, it was a great reminder to be vigilant, like you said, in protecting our kids. I love how you said that when you were young you didn't necesarily like the boundaries your parent's had for you, but now you are so very grateful. That is something I need to remember. I've noticed in my own parenting that if there is something that my husband and I don't want our kids involved in, whether it's a TV program or a play group, etc., that they are so much more understanding about when we say "no" when we explain why. If I just say "no, you can't do that" and leave it at that they may not understand why and actually get upset. But when I sit down with them and explain to them why I've said no, that we love them so much that we want to protect them, then they are understanding about it, and actually happy. Happy because they know their parents love them.
Just something I've noticed in my own parenting.

Wonderful!!!! Thank you for the encouragement. We, our children included, are bombarded every day with garbage that can pollute the soul.
As humans we are sinful enough on the inside before we even start with the pollution bombarding us from the outside.
When we moved a year ago, we did not get cable installed right away. Instead we read books, rented videos from the library, and spent time together.
It was such a welcome change we decided to make it permanent. It has been the greatest decision of our lives. Whenever we do get a glimpse of TV wile visiting others. it is startling just how sinful, tainted, and harmful much of the programming and even commercials really are.

Thanks, Courtney, for your reminder to keep vigilant with what comes into our children's minds. My 10 year old daughter is entering that hormonal/emotional/impressionable stage and I'm SO not prepared to handle it all. I truly don't have a clue what to do or how to handle her. I wish you were years ahead of me and could give good advice on this. It is so exasperating! sigh.
