Putting God Back In The Holidays and A Giveaway

Last week I began a fabulous book titled "Putting God Back In The Holidays" by Bill and Penny Thrasher (Bill is a Professor at my Alma mater - Moody Bible Institute). This book has rattled me a bit because it challenges me to rest in the midst of the busyness that comes with holidays.

This book covers all the holidays, from New Years to Easter to Mother's Day and Labor Day, and it is filled with practical and spiritual ideas to make each holiday special. But when I received the book, I flipped straight to Christmas because Christmas is coming and I want a handle on it!

Thrasher says this is how we will know if we had a "successful" Christmas : "If you have a better relationship with the Lord at the end of the holiday celebrations, you have had a very successful holiday."

When my to-do list multiplies ten-fold for the holidays, I find it extremely difficult to have quiet time with the Lord. How can my relationship with God be better at the end of the holidays? To be honest, much of what goes into making the holidays special is up to the women - from cooking, to decorating, shopping to baking, writing out Christmas cards and opening our homes - we are pressed to our max financially and with our time.

Feeling closer to God at the end of the holidays is a challenge for us. And so, a December Challenge has been born via this book and will be coming soon to Women Living Well. They will be very simple and they will focus on you and your relationship with God in the midst of the holidays. I will be quoting some more of Thrasher's thoughts and giving you some practical ways to rest in the midst of your to-do list.

On page 138, Thrasher reminds us to be on guard against vanity during the holidays. He says "God knows the emptiness and pressure of living independently of Himself. If we take life into our own hands for the holidays, it is up to us to carry our burdens on our own shoulders and to figure out what is best apart from the wisdom of God. Christ came to deliver us out of this vain way of life and to bring us into a relationship with God."

Isn't it true that often we take on too much for the holidays. We take on things that God is not asking us to take on. They can leave us feeling empty because we have taken on burdens God never meant for us to take on.

I will write more in the following weeks on this topic, but until then let me share with you one of the practical ideas Thrasher offers in his book for reaching out in your neighborhood.

"One year, this family set up a prayer mailbox on their covered porch. They sent a note to their neighbors expressing their love and care for them. In it, they told them about the prayer mailbox. If someone was hurting or needed prayer, they could put their request in the box - anonymously if they wished - and the family would be sure to pray for them."

This book is packed with ways to honor God during the holidays and practical tips to live it out. I highly recommend it!

I love this post...The holidays get so busy that it's really easy to forget the whole reason we have Christmas - Jesus Christ. May we all be reminded of the wonder of Christmas this year! Blessings!

This sounds like a must read, and would be a great gift for young couples starting out. I typically give Christmas decorations/supplies for shower gifts, I'll be adding this to the list.

I would love to enter to win!! This book sounds wonderful! My husband is a pastor and this is a VERY stressful and busy tine of the year for our family. This book sounds like it would give me great ideas to help us remember what the Lord has done for us in this incredibly busy time of year.

Thank you for sharing a link, too, so that those of us who don't win can purchase it! YAY!!

This book sounds amazing!

I think the biggest challenge for me is throwing aside all the traditions that are about appearances and stuff to make it a celebration for our family.

So instead of having "perfect" gift tags I have one my children colored for me - perfect.

Instead of perfect cookies I have ones my children made with me - perfect for us

And instead of a pile of presents that takes over the tree and room, we have presents and lots more love.

Our son will not yet be 2 this Christmas and we are just beginning to find our own family traditions. This book seems as if it would have sage advice :)

Every year after Christmas I always tell myself that I'm not going to put so much on my "to do" list for the next holiday. But, when it comes around I always do way to much and stress out. I would love to read this book regardless if I win it or not. I'll wait to buy it however, after the giveaway. (smiles)

My sister Iva sent me a copy of the portion of your blog about keeping God and rest in our holidays. I am eager to sign up to the blog and read more excerpts and ideas as you share them. I feel a little helpless sometimes because we are expected to participate in my husband's extended family celebrations for Christmas day, and despite most of them being Christians, most of the emphasis is on the presents and feasting (and yes, the women do most of the work!). But I remind myself, we do not have to be victims. Even if we do spend half of Christmas day with that, we have the rest of the day, and the whole Christmas season to do things the way we'd like to do them--that is, finding ways to reach out, love others, give, and teach our children what God really wants. And for me, I really desire to keep the holidays simple enough that they can be meaningful. Yet (as I love variety and creativity)I want to keep our celebrations and traditions varied enough that there will always be anticipation, eagerness, and wonder.

Last year, we aided a homeless man on Christmas eve. We feel we may have saved his life as he was freezing in his tent. He said we were angels. We took baked potatoes, turkey, and other fixings to him and others. It was a Christmas eve our family of seven children will never forget! We didn't ask for the opportunity--yes, correct that, I do remember praying and asking the Lord for a special way to celebrate Christmas last year. Wow!
Blessings,
Anna

Courtney-I have a blended family with a his, mine, and ours. The holidays are stressful when we all get together but I believe if I can get God in the middle of our family I could transform the stress into love. I would like to see if this book would help me. Would you mind sharing where to purchase it for those who don't win? Be blessed!

I would love read this book. My family was very upset when I decided to make holidays about God and family and not Santa and gifts. I kept it up even when my family was hard on me. Last year after my sister found God said she wished her husband would let her do the same. I've had family member pull my aside and say they admire me for doing it but they never could. I find it sad. I love your blog. Even though I'm a single mom I find it very helpful and it helps me stay focused on God when I'm going through uncertian times.

I always enjoy reading your blog and new ideas you bring to the table. This books sound fantastic. With a 2 year old and one on the way my mind constantly struggles with keeping a focus on teaching my children the values God wants us to see and learn from him. Working full time, being a mom and wife makes it really challenging to keep that relationship with the Lord. I need his strength to help the ones I love see his truth too. Your blog always brings me back to that mindset and so I thank you!

I would love a copy of this book. I am a new mom and the most important thing I can ever teach my son is that Christ is and should be the center of all things in his life, always. I want to start now showing him that he will always find virtue, saftey, direction and strength in Christ. Material items are just stuff, they offer nothing. " MORE MORE MORE!" is not all it's cracked up to be.

One of the comments here said that they wanted to order Noel Piper's book "Treasuring God in Our Traditions". It is a really great book. You can download it (and a whole bunch of other Piper books) for free off of their website http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/online-books/by-title?page=2

It is towards the bottom of the page.

This sounds like such a good idea. My husband and I will be celebrating Christmas in our own home for the first time. We don't have children so we normally travel to our families homes for Christmas. This year seems like the perfect time to start some family traditions of our own so that when we have kids we can share those!

I would enjoy a copy of this book. It's a challenge for me to include ANY extended family in our holiday...

While I think we do fairly well at keeping the season what it is meant to be, I don't want to share our time with ANYONE...

I want it to JUST be me, Husband, and children... I don't want anyone else to have what we rarely get - uninterrupted time. So selfish... :(

Holidays are hard. I want to make them calm, peaceful, and memorable- so somehow I end up making myself crazy, which of course leads to anything but a calm and peaceful home. I try and remember what the holidays are REALLY all about, but it is so hard at times.

Thanks for the great site, it really is a life saver.

I would love this book. This has been on my mind a lot lately. We have been such a nation of excess (here in America) that now when times are getting harder we are starting to remember what life is all about, and after all God is the giver of life.

I was just talking with my husband the other day about how differently we grew up celbrating the Holidays. (he came from a very gift and all about how much you could get type family). We were saying how we hope that our children understand the reasons behind holidays a little bit better than that.
