Our Back-To-School Daily Schedule

Let me just be honest, I love a schedule. I'm not sure if there's ever been a day that I have perfectly stuck to it. But I have found that creating routines and a rhythm in the home creates peace. It also helps me to keep my priorities a priority and accomplish everything that needs to be accomplished in the day.

I have been practicing this schedule recently and tweaking it and I am sure it may get a few more tweaks by the end of September but here is an idea of what our days will look like this fall.

5:30am - wake and go for a run or do Pilate's

6ish - Quiet Time

6:30 - Write/Post blog post

7-7:45 -Facebook, twitter, emails, surf Blogs

7:45 - Breakfast / Devotions with children

8 - Begin school with Alex (Math,Phonics)/ Alexis does chores and free time

8:45 - Begin school with Alexis (Math, Phonics) / Alex does chores and free time

9:30 - School with Alex (Language Arts) / Alexis participates in Alex's school time

10 - Recess for kids (play outside if weather permits) /Facebook, twitter, email

10:30 - Snack / School with Alexis (Language Arts,Handwriting)

11:15 - School with Alex (Phonics,Handwriting)

12 - Make Lunch and eat

12:30-1:30 - Free time for Kids / Clean, facebook, email

1:30-2:30 - Finish School with kids (Art,Music)

**Note: History and Science done all day on Fridays

2:30-3:30 - Quiet Roomtime for kids / Clean, read

3:30 - Snack & TV time (usually Curious George) / Facebook

4-5:30 - Kids have freetime/ Clean, make dinner

5:30 - Family Dinner

6 - Chill

7:30 - Begin bedtime stories and talk time on each child's bed

8pm - Write the next day's blog post

9pm - Chill with my man

10ish - Fall into bed for some beauty sleep lol!

Through out the week I will insert different activities for the children such as baking together, swimming and gymnastics lessons, flag football practice, women's Bible study group for me and other fun things like play dates and trips to museums.

You may notice that showering is missing in there. I'm not sure where I'll put it lol! During one of the school breaks I'll squeeze it in. This schedule is simply a goal. In an ideal world, everyday I would have my quiet time, exercise, post my blog, homeschool the kids all of their subjects, clean, give my husband some lovin', and interact with my blog readers. But we live in a fallen world - so this will be our goal each day.

And for those who haven't seen my cleaning schedule let me just throw this in there too:

Monday - Menu and Market (Grocery Shop)
Tuesday - Toilets, Tubs, Towels
Wednesday - Wash (Set timer and rotate laundry every hour)
Thursday - Dust
Friday - Floors

If you are a "scheduler" have you written yours up yet? Please share it in the comments section. If you are not a scheduler, do not let my methods frustrate you - this is NOT for everyone. Different personalities really hate this type of thing and flourish under flexibility. God wired me this way and wired you that way - each for his own good purpose. This is what makes the body of Christ beautiful. God uses us all for his glory!

I am very much a schedule person. It gives me a sense of peace knowing that we have a routine in place, even if we don't follow it perfectly. I'm beginning to think about our upcoming school schedule, too. Thanks for posting yours. Along with scheduling and tweaking our own schedule, I love looking at what others do with their day and taking ideas that may work for us.

Ha! I was just going to look at your daily post. It wasn't posted yet so I looked at your archive from around this time last year (since I'm newer to your blog and am trying to catch up). I found your post about schedules and was going to copy it down for future use. I clicked home inadvertantly and found todays post on schedules. Maybe God is using you to try and teach me to be better at scheduling. I have a question for you. Do you get the kids together with other homeschool kids on a regular basis? I struggle with this. My younger son is still enrolled in the local Christian school and I homeschool my seven year old. Because I have one in school it's difficult to get to the meet ups for playtime. I love homeschool, but I want him to have friends too. I know this is a little off topic. Do your extra curricular outings count as the social time? You seem to have it all figured out. Thanks for your blog!

Oh, yes, I am a scheduler, LOL! In fact, I am an AVID scheduler and will schedule and re-schedule if the original schedule doesn't work. I actually blogged about it back in April: http://supermomblues.blogspot.com/search/label/schedules

And again this past Monday:
http://supermomblues.blogspot.com/2010/08/making-your-home-sing-monday-back-to.html

I schedule housework, laundry, the day . . . Everything! I admit, I don't always STICK to the schedule, but I try, LOL!

Great post!

Thanks for posting your schedule! I love seeing what other people's days are like. My days have a loose routine to them, but they are very flexible since I'm a mom to a newborn! I used to have a cleaning schedule down pat, but I've slacked in that area. I really need to come up with a GOAL and get back at it!

This is so helpful. I am starting a whole new work at home job as Will goes off to first grade this year. I know a schedule is going to be crucial, but haven't gotten one on paper... thanks for the inspiration!!! (& like I commented on FB... LOVE the clock!)

Oh, I do love me a good schedule! I try not to get bogged down in times, though. For us, the only strict times things are scheduled are naptime, dinner time, and bedtime. For the rest of the day, we try to have a good flow between free time and school time/mommy-led activities. I also try to give our week a rhythm - for example, grandma day is Monday when I am at work. Fridays we do messy art projects. Thursdays are cooking or baking with the little one. I'm planning on blogging on this topic soon as well!! :)

Anonymous - we are not a part of a homeschool group but my children both participate in weekly activities at church, the YMCA, and sports (my son is currently doing martial arts two times a week and flag football at our local public school). They each have 2-3 favorite friends from church they like to play with plus cousins and neighbor kids.

And you made me laugh - girl - I am on a journey here and I don't have it all figured out - I think right when we have it all figured out they'll be leaving home! That's why we need our Titus 2 Women - they have it figured out! :-)

Hi Courtney,

We don't have as stringent a schedule but we do have one.

We get up around 6 and get ready do chores and such.

9 school starts
(we do Bible, Math, litrature/Grammer, science and then History)

2pm school is done

2-4 Outdoor exploration (if weather permits)

4-5 dinner

After 5 is family time.

8 Bedtime for kiddos

Thanks for sharing your schedule, it's always nice to see what other homeschoolers do.

P.S. I do like your idea of History and Scienc all day Friday. I might have to try that out and see how that works for us.

I enjoy having a schedule as well. It helps me keep a balance of what is important so I don't spend too much time cleaning and not enough time with my daughter or vice versa. When I was a teacher in the public schools, I had schedules for everything - my calendar was my best friend. :)
I just posted a topical schedule for my 2 year old on my blog.

Hi Courtney,

Thank you for your blog. I recently began reading it and have really been enjoying it.

Thanks for sharing your schedule as well. I love creating schedules, but for me, I have found that I don't do so well with an hour by hour schedule. So recently I put together a schedule that has 8 time slots and in those time slots I have several things I'd like to complete. I'm still having a hard time getting everything done, for example exercising at 8:30 hasn't happened yet. LOL. But even if I don't get it all done, I think I'm accomplishing so much more than if I didn't have a schedule at all.

Here is an example of Tuesdays schedule:
6:00 Shower, quiet time, clean MB, morning chores
8-9 Son's chores, breakfast
9-3:30 Son's school (which I have a separate schedule for), prep dinner, prep errands, 20-minute quiet time for son, and baby's nap
3:30 Errands, kids' activities
5-6:00 finish prepping dinner, dinner
7:00-8:30 bedtime routine with the kids
8:30 treadmill

I am working on a schedule for our upcoming school year. Our daughter will be starting her freshman year of high school so I am planning with a bit of trepidation!Lol

I appreciate your honesty in stating that your schedule is the ideal. I know throughout the years of creating schedules, I would often get frustrated because i would set my standards really high and feel like a failure when I didn't achieve the ideal.

Now, I have to plan around fluctuating health issues and I try to give myself much more latitude than I use to!

God's mercies are new every morning and so is the day! Praise God!

In this season, our life demands more of a schedule/routine. But I'm the kind of person that likes things flexible and casual. I know more of a routine would be so helpful. Especially as the kids start school. But I'm struggling to get into a routine and find one that actually works for us right now!

Honestly, I've never been a schedule kind of gal! I know now, though, how much it would benefit all of us! Here's mine. We start homeschooling again on Monday.

5:30 - Quiet time.
6:00 - Exercise.
6:30 - Shower, dress, hair/makeup.
7:30 - Make breakfast.
8:00 - Start chores for the day.
9:00 - School with Evan. (He's doing K so his school time is short)
9:45 - School with Levi.
10:30 - Snack/free time/clean.
11:00 - Finish up with Levi and/or begin with Ava.
12:00 - Lunch/free time/clean.
1:00 - Rest time for boys/School with Ava
3:00 - Everybody up! Chores then free time.
4:30 - Start dinner.
5:30 - Dinner/clean up/RELAX
7:30 - Bathe kids/read stories.
8:30 - Lights out for the kids/time with hubby!!!
10:00 - Bedtime. Ahhhh!

I would like to note that the kids do have chores, Bible time during school time, and outside play time daily. They also attend a homeschool co-op twice a week (this lets me accomplish much at home and run errands) and attend church activities.

Thanks for your encouragement, Courtney!

I like schedules but it seems like ever time I make one up on paper we don't stick to it for some reason and I get bogged down trying to keep to it. We have a basic rutine we fallow though. With our five and three year olds we don't do "desk" work very often, we are up by 7 at the absolute latest (our son is a 5:30am kind of kid *praise the Lord!*) Lunch is between 12 & 12:30 and then bedtime rutine starts at 7:30pm unless it's bath night then it starts closer to 7pm. Kids are in bed close to 8pm. So, each day holds different activities, but we do our schooling throughout the day in different ways I suppose. *smile* One evening our son got to watch as Daddy worked on a rig of ours while our daughter got one on one time with me in the kitchen. We talk about the anatomy of bugs when we see them...make sence? Any ways, we have a basic rutine and it works for us. *smile* Glad yours works for you. *smile* Sincerely, Mommy of two little blessings & so much more!

Thanks for your great ideas! It's always fun to peek in on someone else's day. My only child is 15 months old, so the only really rigid parts of our schedule are naps & meals... but she does sleep in (7am or later) and even though neither of us (baby or me) are morning people, I was thinking of getting up earlier to exercise & shower. Your 5:30am workout inspired me:)

I am working on our school schedule using Managers of Their Homes by the Maxwells. I love it.
I do not have a cleaning schedule because I clean every day. If I clean up after something is used, it helps. Then I just have one day of heavy cleaning (polishing furniture, heavy cleaning of kitchen and bath). I do laundry most days so it doesn't build up. I would like to have a set day for changing sheets though. I will work on that.

I love looking at other ladies schedules! It help alot with planning mine. I am currently woking on a daily schedule. I am homeschooling a first grader and preschooler this year, and have a 19 month old. I love to get the day as organized as possible. I have a weekly household schedule though that I can share.

Sun: Church
Mon: Husband's day off
Tues: School, Laundry - Clothes & Towels
Wed: School, Laundry - Our Sheets, Kitchen & Bathroom
Thurs: School, Laundry - Boys' Bedding & Towels, Bathtub/ Refrigerator
Friday: School, Laundry - Clothes, Deep Cleaning/Organizing
Saturday: School, Laundry - Towels, Mopping, Ironing

I also have a daily morning cleaning schedule such as featherdusting, sweeping, cleaning kitchen, bathroom, vacuuming, etc. All of this is done quickly so that I can move along with my day. I also add in some baking and activities throughout my week.

I am a scheduler but with 5 children ages 17 to 6 it doesn't always go the way I schedule it. For the schoolyear Menu & Market day (I call it something different but its the same thing) often gets me stuck....I get in Menu ruts. So, to help me stay creative but stay structured I came up with this:
Mexican Monday
Tomato-ey Tuesday
Wild-Card Wednesday
Thrifty & Thankful Thursday
Fancy Friday
Soupy Saturday
Sandwich Sunday

Mexican is anything from tacos to cumin-lime chicken, burrito, black bean soup, etc.
Tomato-ey is anything tomato based, from the obvious like pizza and spagetti, to bruchetta or tomato soup.
Wild-Card is my freedom day. I can do leftovers or another Fancy if I like.
Thankful is something ALL my kids truly enjoy AND isn't very expensive...like mac & cheese with hotdogs.
Fancy is our night for grilled salmon, marinated london broil, and en extra special dessert.
Soup and Sandwich speak for themselves....but sloppy joes, BBQ, and pbj grilled have all been had.
Sooooooo, this helps my menu and market jobs go by faster!!! Then I'm not sitting around staring at my menu sheet with writer's block!!! :) Still working on my schedule, will try to post it later. But that's all i have off the top of my head! Courtney I love love love this blog and thank you so much. also....any news on the Vintage Pearl giveaway? My husband was mortified when he checked my blog yesterday and found me going on about my respectful communication (or not) with him. I had to explain.... :) He was so grateful too when I showed him the Completing Him Challenge and your faithfulness with it. So, thanks from a husband who has been blessed by your blog! Thanks Again! No need to respond to me, either! Serioiusly....just want you to know WLW is a blessing.

I, too, schedule. I have been block scheduling for about 7-8 years (right before our 4th was born). Man plans, God directs...for us, following a schedule provides a productive and usually fruitful day. When "life" happens, it serves as a place to pick back up. It helps to keep our home running smoothly, which allows for hospitality and spontaneous activities without the guilt of not having enough done...

I have posted past schedules (chores, menu and daily) here ~ http://smithseasonsoflife.blogspot.com/2009/07/logs-schedules-charts-more.html

I recently posted our new 5 week meal rotation schedule here ~ http://smithseasonsoflife.blogspot.com/2010/08/menu-plan-monday.html

And finally another post with our morning and afternoon chore charts here ~ http://smithseasonsoflife.blogspot.com/2010/08/school-preparations.html

For us, when we utilize our schedule, our home is more orderly, children more peaceful and the day more accomplished...

Although there are NO perfect days, my desire is to be a good steward of time and to teach our children to do the same.

Blessings ~

Jarnette

Love how the first 3 days of the week's chores begin with the same letter as the day. LOL

Thanks for sharing your day-in-the-life. I love seeing how other people make their day work.

I like the schedule! I have made one as well over on my blog. The thing I did not write into it was me waking up early, getting ready and having a quiet time. That's just in my head to do....I think I should write that into the school schedule as well! Thanks for the post.

I am definitely a scheduler. We're currently working on our new routine. It's going pretty well even though we've had a few ups and downs. :)

I made a simple household binder to help me stay on track. On the top of my front sheet i have my morning routine, under that i have 5 boxes ( one for each day) done in themes. Ex.Kitchen days are monday with wipe appliances, scrub floor, water plants, organize cupboards and thursdays with clean fridge, stove, highchair, ceiling fan and oil sliding door.
Under those 5 blocks i have a rotation 3 month schedule for each day of the week. Sundays are off and Saturdays are for missed chores but the rest of the days are for one chore that needs to be done only so often. (Ex. check dryer ductwork, wash nick-knacks,wipe oil cupboards)
I put this list in a page protector so I can check it off as i do it and can keep track of what doesn't get done and where i need to put more effort.
I did the same thing for seasonal chores, grocery lists, whats in the freezers, budgets, things we will need, and a few other things.
This way they are all together and I can glance at them at anytime.

Hello, I love to read your blog. I have been inspired so many times by many of the topics you have blogged about. I, too believe that we are to be our husband's helpmeet. It is obvious you love your family and take time for what matters. I do have an observation that I noticed that I'm hesitant to bring up because I don't want to be one of those people who criticize or judge unfairly. That said, I noticed that there are several times during the day that facebook time is scheduled. I find that many Christians spend more time on media/facebook than in their personal time with the Lord (Quiet time). It just seems a little skewed. This seems to be a trend in today's Christian society. I don't want to be preachy, I was just convicted myself when I read your entry for today because it made me think- do I spend more time reading blogs than I do spending time with my Lord? Just something for us all to think about. Thanks, Deann

Anonymous, Thank you for gently sharing your thoughts.

I think one piece of the puzzle you may be forgetting is that you are reading a Bloggers homeschooling schedule.

If you aren't a blogger - then you don't need to schedule in so much time for writing, tweeting, facebooking etc.

My blog is my ministry - my desire is to pierce the darkness in the on-line world. I'm trying to let this little light of mine shine.

So while someone else may be baking cookies for their neighbor in the afternoon - I'm on facebook ministering to women through words...my ministry is being a weaver of words.

It's at my keyboard that I lay down my life and offer up writing as a sacrifice for God's glory. So my facebook/blog/tweeting time is not play time. It's connecting and ministering to real women on the other end (it's hard work - I'd love to get a bowl of chips and chill - read a book or magazine but there's ladies waiting to hear back from me).

I do agree that facebook can be abused and that I do not always use it perfectly...or in a timely manner. But God has done a lot of great work there so I'm committed to making a difference using this tool.

Much Love,
Courtney

Hi there. I came across to your blog from Kelly's. It's good to see your schedule and to see how much time is spent on homeschooling. Are you glad you started it? I hope so, I bet it is fun too.
I have to say I thought the same thing as 'Anonymous' about facebook. But your answer makes complete sense. Facebook allows us to connect, and it can be for the better as long as we are careful about what we look at : ) I myself visit blogs (obviously), but they are all Christian blogs. It's hard to escape technology, but we can use it for our benefit!

Um...you are my hero:) I just found you from Kelly's Korner, and I designed my own "ideal" schedule extremely similar to yours! I am in awe if you are able to do all of this, cleaning and blogging included! WOW:)
My kids are 4 and 1, so they don't need much homeschooling obviously;), but I do have a curriculum for this summer for them. Keeping up with that, playing, blogging, etc. is stressing me out, but reading this has really encouraged me. THANK YOU!
Christine:)
