Pursuing Excellence

Word Filled Wednesday: Proverbs 31:24 "She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes."

Is anyone else overwhelmed by the Proverbs 31 woman yet? Let me be completely honest - I am! Over the past 16 week series, we've watched her be a jewel to her husband, children, servants and even the poor. We've watched her rise early, stay up late, plant a vineyard, sew her own clothes, her family's clothing, the tapestries and beddings! And now we see that the Proverbs 31 woman knows she is capable of more and she does more! The cherry on top of all of this woman's work is excellence!

The lesson in Proverbs 31:24 is she is willing to use her talents to add to her family's finances BUT she does not sacrifice the family pursuing them.

The Proverbs 31 woman doesn't just make linen - she makes "fine" linen. She applies excellence to her work. Excellence is not perfection but rather offering quality work. And as a result - her product was in demand by the merchants. The merchants were most likely from Canaan and Egypt and most likely wealthy. So she could interact with people from all walks of life from the poor to the wealthy and she did it with excellence.

The Proverbs 31 woman's family, the merchants and the poor benefited from the Proverbs 31 woman's diligence in her home business. As you ponder this verse ask yourself:
1. What are my talents?

2. During this season of life, if I use my talents to benefit my family financially will I be sacrificing in other priority areas?

3. If the answer to number 2 is no, then am I performing my talent with excellence? In what ways could I be better trained or put more time into becoming excellent at what I do?

For some, this is not the season of life to pursue your talents to be used outside of the home. For others, now is the time to spread your wings and use your talents in a new arena. The lesson in Proverbs 31:24 is: she is willing to use her talents to add to her family's finances BUT she does not sacrifice the family pursuing them. Seek God and your husband's wisdom in this decision making process and then whatever you do - do it with excellence like the Proverbs 31 woman!

A godly woman I know, who is older than I and has several children, shared with me that she felt that the achievements of the Proverbs 31woman were over the course of a lifetime. In other words, there are seasons, as you've spoken of. That was encouraging for me as a young mother to hear. Yes, we need to pursue excellence, but as you've reminded, we can't always do it ALL, right this minute.

I need to hear that!

I appreciate the reminder that excellence is the key here. For many of us that are young moms, I think we need to remember that a focus on excellence at home is worthy in this season of our lives. So often I meet women that feel the need to do something "bigger" and more "important" outside of the home. There are seasons where our talents may be used outside of our homes, but I appreciate the call to really look at our lives and priorities and pursue those areas God has called us to. We can know these areas by studying the Word. I have enjoyed following your posts on the woman outlined in Proverbs 31. Thank you!!

She really knew that there is a time for everything....
I like your definition of excellence...sometimes we mistake it as perfection and want to give up.
I often put myself down because I tend to be a Jill of all trades and master of none.....and I can lose the rejoicing in what I can do....
and that is not perfect, but it at a level of excellence that not all achieve...I am putting it badly....in that I am not trying to blow my own trumpet...but I like the difference between the perfection....that I what I tend to see in others....but often fail to see the excellence in my own things.

Yes, that woman is definitely seasonal...the picture is so perfect, love the thought of each one of us in our own seasons, having those characteristics of old flowing through our modern day lives! Thank you, Courtney, for making her so real and accessible!

I have only been following your blog for a little over a month now. Your Proverbs study has helped me in so many ways. I wrote down your "How to be a treasure to your husband" list and keep it close to me at all times. Thank you for this study. Thank you for encouraging me to open up my bible and personally study it more often.
On another note, Yes this proverbs woman is a bit overwhelming. But I think that just as we strive everyday to be better christians, we should also strive everyday to be better wives, mothers, and homemakers.

I love Pro 31's Virtuous Woman and have come back to that passage to glean from it over and over. We are the family that needs 2 incomes but I wanted to stay home w/ my kids from the time before I had them.

Some how God has made a way and I've been home for all their lives (the oldest about to turn 6).

Though I don't make a full time income I've been able to do things like sell on Ebay, watch other people's children from my home, sell stuff at flea markets and local childrens' sales and blogging now.

Different seasons, different "jobs" ;)
