What Are The Secret Desires of Your Heart?

In this video, I talk about a time when my husband and I were clashing over how we were going to spend our weekends (my husband was traveling extensively for business on the weekdays). My husband wanted to spend them at home with just me and the children. I wanted to go out and have fun! I neglected to tell how the clash was resolved.

I listened to Keith and tried to understand why he felt this way. Then he listened to me. We came to an agreement that before I scheduled anything I would run it by him. Together we would decide which events to attend and which we should skip. We ended up missing a lot that year...and I learned a lesson in contentment and sacrifice. Keith is still a less social person than I am, but we have come to a place of understanding and self-sacrifice on both ends. Sometimes as wives we have to be willing to "go first".

James 1:12-18 ESV

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

16Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

The method of Bible study I mention in the video above is called the S.O.A.P. Method:

1. S- Write out the scripture passage for the day.

2. O- Write down 1 or 2 observations from the passage.

3. A- Write down 1-2 applications from the passage.

4. P- Pray over what you learned from today’s passage.

Next Monday, we'll complete James chapter 1.

Courtney, I especially loved the last part of this video. It is SO true that when we delve into God's word it changes us! And in turn, our desires change to be desires aim to please God. We find ourselves more willing to sacrifice ourselves in order to align with his Will. That was a blessing to me today! I LOVE your Bible lessons on video--PLEASE continue!

I'm really enjoying the James study, and I did identify with this video. I had a similar situation with my husband a few years ago when he travelled in Europe most weeks. I wanted to see the places he was seeing, so booked 'mini breaks' on weekends so my son and I could see them with him (we live in England so it's not far). Poor man, he was hardly ever home! When I think how selfish I was being I just cringe. Thankfully, God helped us find a balance too, and we still got to visit lots of nice places some weekends, but let weekends at home take priority.

Thank you for being so open and honest - I always learn from your teaching! And thank you also for hosting the homemaking link up.

I have to admit, I seldom watch vlog's - it is just one of those things that for me, doesn't really fit into my day, I prefer to read at my own pace, on my own time and to be able to re-read things over. But, as I read the intro paragraphs I felt like this was one I really needed to listen to. My husband started a new job where he is on the road 14 hours a day; when he gets home, he eats dinner and goes to bed plus he is gone 2-3 nights a week. We are working on this transition as we now face the same struggle - when the weekend comes, he wants to just be home and I am ready to do SOMETHING!! The last two weekends have been pretty tough but I'm ready to turn that around and make weekends fun at home - we don't have to go anywhere to still have fun! Thanks for sharing.

Jackie - Girl you are walking my road and I know the feeling! Marriage goes through ups and downs as we come in and out of different seasons of life. It takes hard work to keep it together and filled with peace, patience, love and intimacy.

Pray for your marriage, for your man, for yourself and don't stop working at it! Your husband is blessed to have a wife who is willing to work at it!

Keep walking with the King!

My husband isnt very social either and when he has time off wants to have time off. I was a single mom for 13 years prior to our marriage so for me time off meant getting things done while i could. After much bickering I now 'allow' him one day to set his own pace. I ask nothing of him, no demands or anything but the next day is for errands and visits that need to be made.

(by 'allow' I mean that no actual agreement was made between us, I've just decided he thinks differently and am backing off on my frustrations after realizing that after that one day off he is bored and ready to do the errands ;) )

Hi Courtney! I just have to tell you what a blessing you have been to my life! (As I am typing this, I have tears rolling down my face) God has blessed you to be a vessel to uplift and encourage women and for that I am so thankful for HIM to that. I have learned so much from you from your videos and blog! You have helped save my marriage (no more frumpy housewife, my husband loves to come home), you helped me to become a better mother (teaching my kids the word of God, patience) and a better servant of God (Good Morning Girls, bible study, prayer). I have told so many of my friends about your blog! May God bless you for sowing into the lives of women!!

I loved this post because this situation is somewhat similar to me and my husband. He is an early riser (like 3AM!!) so after a long day at work he is ready for bed by 7PM. It's hard for me because I get home at 5PM so it doesn't feel like we have a lot of time together, let alone be able to do stuff outside of the house. He is my homebody husband and I love him just the way he is. It is a struggle sometimes to not get frustrated at not being able to do things/ go out places because he wants to be home, however I forget the wonderful things he does for me while he IS up so early. He makes most of the food in our household since he is up so early so he makes breakfast and lunch and most nights dinner too.

God is so good to us to give us marriage. It can be difficult sometimes to work through our sins and selfish desires, but what a blessing to be able to move past and grow from those struggles. He is just ever forming us into one. Thank you for your story, it is encouraging!

Warm Regards,
Nicole
