The Danger of Bloggers

Faith plus nothing equals nothing. You can know more about a person by what they do rather than what they say. I would say this is one of the dangers of bloggers. The world mainly sees my words. But the integrity of my writing comes by how I LIVE out the words I write.

Sally Clarkson once said "The first book anyone ever reads will be your family." What she meant was - live the truth out in your home first - then write. I want to write from the faith that is lived out in my home and that takes repentance and the pursuit of God daily on my knees.

There is NOTHING good or Godly within me. I am a sinner saved by grace and it is through his strength that I can do anything good at all.  My true faith brings good works.  Those with a dead faith can substitute words for works. Words are cheap - they are easy...but living out our faith, that's hard!

In the James 2:14-26 it says "19  You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! "   And again the danger of bloggers come to mind.  We must ask, could some of those who blog in the name of "faith" not actually be of the "faith"?  Absolutely!  We must test those we follow - do their words and their life match.  And the truth is in blog land that is hard to do!

So my two thoughts: 1.  Let's be on guard as to whose voices we listen to - from our Pastor, to our Bible study leader to our favorite blogs.  Test their words against God's word - are they true?  Watch their life closely.  2.  Let's look into our own hearts, if someone were watching us closely would they say our walk matches our talk?

(This video was first played on the Good Morning Girls blog.  Our groups did a challenge where we mailed care packages to the Mercy House - this challenge is over but you can visit the Mercy House here.)

James 2;14-16 ESV

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18  But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19  You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20  Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21  Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22  You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23  and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness"—and he was called a friend of God. 24  You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25  And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26  For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

I'm a new reader of your blog. This verse has been following me around for the past couple of weeks and I think it's safe to say that Someone is trying to tell me something. Thank you! This is a wonderful blog and I'm excited to read more!

Thank you so much for this post. It is a reminder to make sure all I do is in line with the Word and that my faith is not in words only. God Bless you and have a great week!

When I was younger I remember someone in the church telling us youth that we should be following along in our bibles just to make sure that whoever was speaking was telling the truth. I though he was crazy, I was in church who would lie? But as I have grown, I am realizing how important it is to do this. There are a lot of false teachers. I know I need to read, pray, and reread and really see what God is trying to tell me. In the end that is what matters, MY relationship with him. Thanks for the reminder!

It's great that you brought this up. It has been on my mind because our preacher just gave a lesson on this last Wednesday. 1 John 4:1-2 says "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." He even said something similar to what you said about staying on guard even when listening to people we trust, like our pastors (and he included himself), bible study leaders, etc. His point is that even "good" leaders can say things that might be incorrect or even just misunderstood, even unintentionally, so we must study and ask questions if we don't understand something. His main point being that if we don't study and just follow some person blindly because we think they are teaching us the will of God, we won't know if we are being misled.

I've only recently discovered your blog, but what I've seen so far is really impressive.

I love this post and how honest it is about faith, blogging, and living the life we write about. I too, blog about faith. Every day I have to remind myself to live out what I'm writing about. I have to ask myself if my actions within my own family and my words are glorifying to God. It's tough.

Many Blessings,
Rosann

Amazing! I read this post yesterday and little did I realize that I would need it (and be reminded about it via FB) just this morning! I read a devotion/blog post this morning from what I consider a trusted source...the post and Scripture used pierced my heart. As I was journaling about it I thought it would be best if I looked up the Scripture in my Bible to see the whole story...what did Jesus really say? I was amazed at what I found. There was so much more to the story and what I found there was Jesus. Telling me to always come to Him and to look for Him in everything. His message to me came directly from His Word. It was a bit different than the sweet lady who wrote the post. Maybe that is what we need to remember that these blog posts are only a beginning and should not be the only way we hear/read the word of God. Thanks for your reminder and encouragement. Blessings, Hope

Love your blog. I'm not even sure how I ended up here, but sure am glad I did!!!
Every Sunday our Pastor reminds us that we should have our Bibles with us and that we should write down what he says it means and go home and double check it!
The same seems to be true for blogs. How do we really know who people are? We simply can't. I, personally, can't visit each blogger at home unannounced... LOL! The thought of what I might walk into has me chuckling softly...
I do think that, for the most part, it is possible to see who someone is over time... eventually their blog will say where they are/are not with the Lord.
'That which is done in darkness will come out in the light'...
love that verse (don't ask me to find it, though!
God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!

It is so important that we follow scripture and that the people we follow do not take principles of scripture and make them major doctrine. That is where it gets scary. Read scripture in context, and search the scripture like the Bereans.
Another danger in blogging is that we can neglect teaching our OWN children if we are not careful. Kids get taught first, then blog. God makes it clear that they are our first responsibility and that no one else should have to do our job. Wrote about priorities here: http://joyfilleddays.wordpress.com/2010/10/31/203/
Love your blog, Courtney.
Love,
Sarah

As one of the non-Christian bloggers entered in the Top 25 Faith Blogs by Moms, I'd like to thank you for mentioning us!

It's true, you should always test a blog/bloggers before trusting them - blogs of any faith - to make sure that they are worth your time. It's so important to make sure that they are part of a supportive, honest community and that they support all women of all faiths that are out there doing their bests for their families and their communities (both online and off).

Mrs B - I am honored that you stopped by and took the time to comment :-) I welcome you here!

This blog post was in no way written in reference to the contest - just wanted to be sure you knew that ;)

We are of different faiths but I love you. Now let me be honest - I do not love what you teach on your blog. It is contrary to the Bible (which is no secret to either of us) and I must love what God loves and hate what God hates. But I love you!

I hope that you find a homey place here where you can learn more about Jesus and the God we serve! He loves you so!

Mrs. B - I just reread your comment and I noticed that you suggested I should support all faiths...I believe the Bible to be God-breathed and God's word. You will not find me "supporting" all faiths because the God of the Bible does not support all faiths.

In John 14:6 Jesus said "I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." There is only one way to God and that is through Jesus.

I just want to be sure that I am clear that though I don't support your faith - because I'd be violating God's word to do that - I do care about you.

Thank you for the welcome. I would like to correct one misunderstanding. I didn't say anyone should *support all religions* I stated that we should *support all women* of all religions. Despite what path a woman chooses, she deserves to be respected as a person, and that's what I strive to do.

I'm not looking for conversion or to change my faith, but I deeply respect the choices that others make regarding their religious views, and wish them all well.

Just wanted to let you know I am voting for you and remind you not to get discouraged (about the pagan blogs in the circle of moms contest)

Who knows how many pagan witches (and thier followers) are going to Christian blogs (and hopefully get exposed ot the gospel) now b/c they are logging on to vote.

I think God is up to something pretty great. :)

Courtney,
I came to your blog by way of the Top 25 Faith Blog by Moms contest because I am voting for certain blogs in the list. I found this post while reading your blog and I feel I should offer up what the traditional definition of 'faith' is.
According to the Merrian-Webster Dictionary faith is belief in the traditional doctrine of a religion, something that is believed especially with strong conviction; especially : a system of religious beliefs.
While the dictionary also defines it as a belief, trust and loyalty to God, most people don't realize the rest of the definition.
I completely respect your choice to believe in your God and I hope that I am given the same respect for my beliefs.
Blessings to you and your beautiful family.

PS. Love the recipes you have. They look yummy.
