Children's Poems That Go With Pumpkin Carving

As you are carving your pumpkins tell your children and grandchildren these stories:

The Pumpkin Prayer

Lord, open my mind so I can learn new things about you.
(Cut off top of pumpkin)

Remove the things in my life that don’t please you. Forgive the wrong things I do and help me to forgive others.
(Remove the guts)

Open my eyes to see the beauty you’ve made in the world around me.
(Cut open eyes)

I’m sorry for the times I’ve turned my nose at the good food you provide.
(Cut out nose)

Let everything I say please You.
(Cut out mouth)

Lord, help me show your light to others through the things I do.
(Light the candle inside)

Amen.

Here's another similar story that I found on the blog Lamp Unto My Feet. Tell your children this story as you carve your pumpkin together:

"God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off you may have gotten from the other pumpkins. Then he cuts the top off and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see."

  3. This is very cool. I wish I'd heard about this when my kids were little. We used to carve pumpkins and my hubby would roast the seeds.

It would have been a lovely way to tie the Lord in with it. Thank you for sharing and thank you for linking up today!

BTW, I am having a free blog makeover giveaway. Just thought I'd mention it in case you're interested!

  5. Cool - Christian stories to go with pumpkin carving. Almost makes me want to go buy a pumpkin and the tools for the carving job!

  6. We've done something very similar for the past few years, before we found any special devotions or books about it. The kids love it and I enjoy it because we can enjoy a very simple and fun fall activity together - while keeping it Christ centered. We also get to keep and roast the pumpkin seeds - which my kids LOVE.

  7. I love that, and I love Liz Curtis Higgs. This pumpkin got me thinking of a weird church story. Our friends had a big pumpkin patch, so they cut letters out of 12 pumpkins to spell "Jesus is Lord" and light them at the church on Halloween night. Some guy at the church got mad. NOT in the way we'd expect him to be mad.

He was angry because he said that "Satan is lord." He said that until Jesus returns to earth Satan is god of the earth. Caused a big unnecessary fight at the church. Was the weirdest squabble ever.

    Anyway, I'm done yacking.

I LOVE hearing from my readers and I pray for you all regularly. I try to respond to questions in the comment section as quickly as I can - within 1-3 days.

Due to an overflowing email inbox and the desire to keep my husband, children and home first priority in my life, I am no longer able to answer personal emails at this time. I apologize.
